Dam Removal Doubles Upstream Biodiversity

Little Sewickley Creek is a tributary to the Ohio River not far from the suburbs of Pittsburg ranked highly for its water quality and ecological value. A 1928 dam was preventing species movemnet upstream, with 29 species seen below the dam but only 7 above it. Now, only fifteen months after the dam removal, 9 new species have been seen upstream. Newly detected species included spotfin shiners, rainbow darters, smallmouth bass, spotted bass, rainbow and green sided darters, longnose dace, bluntnose minnow, and bluegill.
